Bio/Artist Statement
My name is Kareen Hague. I am an experimental fine artist and I describe my work as abstracted realism. I layer my canvas with papers and mediums to create an unexpected surface to capture the many layers of colour. The texture is not always captured in the photos of my work but it is the texture and thin layers of colour that draws you in. I use both traditional and non-traditional mark making tools to develop the background and then layer in the details.

My work is derived from nature, botanicals, trees, water and abstracted landscapes. It makes me so happy to capture feelings of wonder and joy in the nuggets of detail that make you ponder what is beyond. Surrounding myself with inspiration, I love to walk trails by the woods and fields and rivers feel the calm and peer through the grasses to see many layers of colour. Squint your eyes and it is a blur of texture and colour. I want you to feel a joy when you look at my work wondering if it is a place you have been, a snippet of a view you might have seen or a place where you might go one day. Surround yourself with happiness!

Years of experimentation with colour have guided me to my current range of blue, green, ocher, teal, pink. With these shades I can create any variation I choose. Blending gives the best complementary colours and combining them all gives the best warm black to highlight and lowlight. I find that layering these colours over the textured surface of my canvas creates such depth and interest. My colourful pallet gives me such joy when painting! A little green here, a little blue, there for deeper teals, pop it with surprise. A little ocher, a little buff and add some pink. Soften with buff, more muted or fresh depending on the blend. I love the contrast of colour that occurs as the colours are blended and layered.

I have painted my entire life. I am primarily self-taught but I have to give credit to the many artists who share their skills doing workshops in person and on line. I take workshops whenever I can to constantly move my practice forward. I come from a family of creatives. I have been exposed to the creative arts as long as I can remember. I had a full time Artist for a mother and a wood worked, sculptor, carver, educator for a father. Today I split my time designing sweaters, choosing colours, planning photo shoots for Canadian manufacturer Parkhurst knitwear and my full time side hustle painting, painting, painting!

She believes....#Dowhatyoulove #LovewhatyoudoThis is why she paints!
