Muskoka has been my home for over 30 years and constantly inspires me with its beauty and ruggedness. It is a magical place, an artist's treasure, sparking my inner artist in 2007, when I began my first watercolour painting lesson. My work grows with each workshop, course and experience, using watercolour, India ink, soft pastel, oil and acrylic paint. I exhibit my work in group and juried shows, having receiving awards for Best Use of Media in 2017 and Best 2D work in show in 2018. In 2020, I presented my first solo show, titled “For The Love of Horses”.
I do have an impressionistic bent to my work which evolves with each piece. The style of painting comes from emotion during the painting exercise and from the subject. I work from nature, recollections of time, photographs, sometimes from dreams. I will approach a painting with a loose idea of what it will look and feel like. As I sketch my thoughts into my book with graphite or ink, I watch it take shape. When the urgency to go directly to my painting pushes me to skip this part, I have grown to embrace this spontaneity with pleasure, as it leads me to new levels in painting.
Surrounded by tall forest and rugged bedrock, my home studio is an open window to nature. My work embraces the colours and textures of the Canadian landscape, capturing the excitement of light, shadow and movement. Whether representational, impressionistic or abstracted, I expressively move my palette knife to mix, scratch and layer paint colours to bring life to each creation.
