The sensory experience of carving and feeling the block for texture is reflected in the way I feel compelled to run my fingers across the bark of trees. Most of my prints begin with the practice of collecting leaves, pine cones, bark, and other botanical specimens during walks. This blends the parts of nature I am drawn to most with the printmaking processes that ground me. Moss and lichen are fascinating, and the use of embossing in this print highlights and honours the intricate beauty that can be found on the sidewalk if you’re open to seeing it.
Through works such as Home Fragment I, I explore the intersection of place, memory, and the natural world. While I have the physical specimen in front of me, the form that emerges is a slightly abstracted representation. Having moved to Muskoka recently from Guelph, this piece holds the imprint of a familiar neighbourhood as well as a period of life that brought me back to both art and nature. It’s a full circle moment to be back in Muskoka, the place I’ve always felt called to when I need to feel at home within myself. The stunning landscapes and trees bring both peace and inspiration. In a time of material uncertainty, my work suggests that the grounding essence of the earth can be carried as a reminder of our place within it.
